Orchestral Manoeuvres in the Dark Wiki
1984 Junk Culture tour programme 1 cover

The tour to promote the Junk Culture album tour began in the UK on 26 May 1984, and then moved on to Spain, France, Germany, Canada, USA, Australia (from 03 August), two dates in Japan, then back to Benelux and again to the UK and Europe, finishing in the Rep. of Ireland on 20 October.

The group toured for the first time as a six-piece with the addition of the Weir Brothers on brass.

Some of the new album tracks had already been played live in the showcase preview in September 1983.

Planned dates in Portugal (straight after the first UK leg) were cancelled.

Line-up[]

Support act[]

Support acts varied throughout the tour although the most notable were Fiction Factory (first UK leg and various dates later in the year), The Reverb Bros (selected dates on second UK leg) and Liverpool band Cook Da Books (final Eire dates).

Set-lists[]

Typical set-lists were based around all tracks from the Junk Culture album, usually opening with a recording of the title track. Locomotion was often performed a second time as a final encore.

Most of the group's previous hits were also featured (including Telegraph) and selected non-singles such as Motion & Heart, She's Leaving, Bunker Soldiers and Julia's Song, the latter with augmented brass parts which would also be committed to vinyl. Early B-side, a cover version of Waiting For The Man, was also revived for this tour, again with added brass by the Weir Bros.

New songs were added from the second UK leg in September, notably Radio Waves and Stanlow as a show closer. Junk Culture tracks Apollo and Never Turn Away were dropped.

Almost was played on 28 September to mark the 6th anniversary of OMITD's first ever gig.

Notes[]

  • The tour programme features a page written by Mal and Martin about recording the album and rehearsing for the live show, with several jovial 'digs' at Andy & Paul.[1]
  • The Portugal dates were cancelled at the last minute, so the band took advantage of the plane tickets and 5 days off to take a holiday.
  • PH was hit by a flying bottle at the Barcelona gig although was luckily only slightly injured.
  • The video for Tesla Girls was made during a relatively quiet period in early July. OMD also recorded a performance of Talking Loud and Clear for Top of the Pops in the same period.
